Freshman Consulting Internships 2026: Two of Eight Fit
Of eight programs the market files under freshman consulting internships, two name a first year in the firm's own words, and neither is on a live firm URL.
- Of the eight programs commonly listed as freshman consulting internships, four state second-year eligibility in the firm's own words, two state first-year, one states no year at all, and one puts the word freshman on a portfolio page rather than on the program.
- Bain's Consulting Kickstart page, which several results describe as a first-year program, reads: we welcome second-year (sophomore) undergraduate students.
- The two that do name first years are Deloitte Discovery and EY Launch, and neither is served on a live firm URL today. Deloitte's page has returned 404 since 25 July 2025.
- One of the eight had an open application window on 30 September 2026: Consulting Kickstart, closing 5 October at 11:59pm PST.
- EY Launch is the only one of the eight that publishes a wage, at $25.53 to $36.03 an hour, a range of $10.50.
Eight programs get listed under this search. We opened each firm's own page and copied the eligibility line. Four say second year. Two say first year. One says nothing about year of study. One puts the word freshman on a different page from the program it describes. Here is the full set, with the wording.
Two of eight consulting internships name a first year
The count is the answer. Of eight programs, the firms themselves name first-year eligibility on two, and both of those two live at addresses the firms no longer serve. The arithmetic checks: 4 second-year, plus 2 first-year, plus 1 with no year, plus 1 on a portfolio page, makes 8.
| Program | Firm's own eligibility wording | Year named | Window on 30 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bain, Consulting Kickstart | "second-year (sophomore) undergraduate students attending a four-year university in the United States or Canada" | Second | Open, closes 5 October |
| Bain, CREW | "for second-year (sophomore) undergraduate students" | Second | Closed, 2027 undated |
| Bain, First Forward | "for sophomore (second-year) students who will complete a four-year undergraduate degree in the US by winter 2027 or spring 2028" | Second | Closed |
| BCG, Growing Future Leaders | "Current sophomore (second year) student at a U.S. or Canadian university" | Second | Closed |
| Deloitte, Discovery | "College freshman or sophomore with definitive plans to pursue a bachelor's degree" | First and second | Page returns 404 |
| EY, Launch | "College freshman, sophomore or junior status" | First, second and third | Host offline |
| Bain, BEL | "undergraduate students" and nothing further | None | Closed, 2027 undated |
| KPMG, Embark Scholars | year of study absent, criterion is "at least 3 additional semesters" remaining after the program | None on the program | Not published |
Two out of eight is a quarter, and one of eight had an open window on the day we checked. The eight sit inside a wider set that we map in consulting internships, where the ten-week seats and the short events are separated by the duration each firm publishes. Those two fractions are the useful summary of this whole search. The rest of this page is where each line came from, because a table without its sources is a claim.
Reading about a consulting firm is not preparing for a consulting firm.
Take the readiness checkBain writes sophomore on the program the market calls a freshman one
Consulting Kickstart is the program most often described as Bain's first-year offering. Bain's own program page, checked 30 September 2026, opens with: "We welcome second-year (sophomore) undergraduate students attending a four-year university in the United States or Canada to join us for this interactive, virtual series."
That sentence is the firm's, on the firm's page, about the firm's program. It outranks every description of the program written elsewhere, including this one.
The page also carries what almost none of the others do, a live date: "Applications for Consulting Kickstart are now open. Submit your application by Monday, October 5th at 11:59pm PST." It lists fifteen North American offices and describes a virtual series with exposure to business leaders and a session on how Bain recruits. It publishes no duration in days, no selection step, and no number of places.
Bain's two neighboring programs read the same way on the year. CREW is "for second-year (sophomore) undergraduate students," and First Forward is "for sophomore (second-year) students who will complete a four-year undergraduate degree in the US by winter 2027 or spring 2028." Three Bain programs, three statements of the same year, and none of them is the first.
Deloitte Discovery says freshman, at a URL that stopped answering
Discovery is one of the two programs that genuinely names first years, and it does so twice. The program article states that "the Discovery internship is designed to expose freshman and sophomore level summer interns to different client service businesses at Deloitte," and its eligibility line reads "college freshman or sophomore with definitive plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in a business, accounting, economics, STEM, or related field." A third sentence confirms it: "the Discovery Internship is open to all eligible freshman and sophomore students."
Then it qualifies itself. The sentence about what comes next reads: "Sophomore Discovery interns may have the opportunity to receive a client service internship at the conclusion of the Discovery Internship Program." A first year is eligible to attend. A second year is the one offered a route onward.
Reading that page took work, and the reason matters. The live URL returns a 301 and then a 404. The archive index shows a last successful response on 7 April 2024, a redirect on 25 April 2025, and a 404 from 25 July 2025. We read it from the 7 April 2024 capture in id_ mode. Meanwhile the Discovery postings still visible on Deloitte's application site are titled for sophomores and juniors. Our Deloitte Discovery page sets out that program in full.
EY Launch, the only one of the eight with a published wage
Launch is the second program that names first years, and its wording is the broadest of all eight: "college freshman, sophomore or junior status." A second line explains the logic behind it. The internship is "for college students who are two years or more from graduation," which is a rule about distance from graduating rather than about class year.
It is also the only one of the eight that publishes money. The posting states: "the salary range for this job, in the US, is $25.53- $36.03 per hour." The spread is $36.03 minus $25.53, which is $10.50, so the top of the range is about 1.41 times the bottom. No other program among the eight publishes a rate at all.
Two further details from the same posting. It lists 45 US cities on one listing. And its deadline reads "applications will be accepted until November 23," with no year attached to it, which makes the date unusable without asking.
The access problem here is worse than Deloitte's. The host studentjobs.ey.com does not answer at all in 2026. This posting was read from a capture dated 21 September 2024, and it is the last readable Launch listing on an EY domain. Treat every detail in this section as two years old and verify it with a recruiter before relying on it. A sweep of EY's own early careers board on 29 September 2026 found 92 live openings with the word Launch in none of the 100 job titles collected.
The ten-week consulting internship, and the year it demands
Seven of the eight are exposure events lasting days. One is a real summer internship, and it is closed to first years.
BCG describes Growing Future Leaders as "a 10-week immersive summer internship program," and its eligibility line is "current sophomore (second year) student at a U.S. or Canadian university, who expects to graduate between December 2027 and August 2028." Its selection has real steps too: a "short essay about an experience that brings to life either your commitment to creating an environment of inclusion and respect for the individual, or that demonstrated the unique perspective or background you will bring to BCG (100 words or less)," and the Consulting Career Assessment, at 30 to 35 minutes with 24 hours to complete it once invited.
The program also shows what happens when a page changes and nobody tells you. Between the November 2024 capture and the April 2025 one, the ethnic eligibility criteria disappeared, the 100 word essay and the assessment appeared, and a promise of a scholarship and a return offer as Summer Associate left the page entirely. The current status line reads "the Growing Future Leaders application is now closed."
So the single longest and most substantial program on the list is a second-year program, with a written test, whose terms moved inside five months. That is the honest shape of this market, and the reason a first year should not plan around any one of these eight.
Are you ready to get an offer at a consulting firm?
Where the word freshman actually sits at KPMG
KPMG's early career page carries the sentence that puts the firm on freshman lists: "As early as your freshman year, we offer opportunities to help build your resume, network with KPMG professionals, and develop your leadership skills."
Read what it is attached to. That line sits on a portfolio page covering several pre-internship programs at once, Embark Scholars among them alongside Rise, HBCU Talent+, Ace the Case and Branding U. It describes the portfolio as a whole. Embark itself is one item in that list.
Embark's own criteria are expressed in a different unit. Applicants "must be first-generation or Community College students pursuing or intending to pursue a Bachelor or Master of accounting (or other equivalent) or IT related degree," and on completion "candidates must have at least 3 additional semesters (or equivalent for quarter schools) to complete before obtaining their degree." Three remaining semesters does not exclude a first year, and it does not name one either.
One more thing worth saying plainly. A conversion rate of 95 percent is widely attributed to Embark. It appears on no KPMG page we have read, in any form, and we found no firm page publishing an offer rate for any of these eight.
One program names no year, and one rule sits on the wrong page
Bain's BEL is the oldest of the eight and the least specified. The page says the firm "founded the BEL program in 2009 to help undergraduate students explore a career in management consulting," and that is the entire statement of who it is for. No year of study, no graduation year, no duration, no format, no dates, no numeric deadline, no places, no criteria, no interview process.
There is a rule governing BEL, and it is written on a different program's page. First Forward states: "If you've already participated in the BEL or CREW program, you're not eligible for First Forward. However, if you were not accepted into BEL or CREW, we strongly encourage you to apply to First Forward!" A candidate reading only the BEL page cannot know this exists.
The same First Forward page is also the only one of the eight that names a selection step, "several questions in a video format through the HireVue platform following the application deadline," and the only one that tells a rejected applicant where to go next: "please stay in touch and apply for an Associate Consultant Internship (ACI) opportunity in the summer prior to your third (junior) year."
That last sentence is the most useful line on any of the eight pages, because it states the actual entry point. The programs are optional. The junior-year internship is the door. Our consulting internship interview page covers what that door tests.
What a first year can build when the consulting internships are shut
There is no way to manufacture a program that does not exist for your year. There is a way to build the evidence the next application needs, and one firm publishes the specification for it.
Bain's Consultant posting, checked 30 September 2026, lists what the job consists of: research a client organization and its industry, run interviews, focus groups and workshops, identify issues and form hypotheses, execute analysis, translate data into insight, present recommendations to decision makers, move clients to action, and mentor junior colleagues. That is the list a first-year project should be able to echo in two lines.
Four things that produce that kind of line, in order of how much they prove:
- A piece of analysis for a real organization with a number in the outcome. A local business, a student society budget, a campus service. The result matters more than the logo.
- A role where you decided something and can say what changed. Running an event, a team, or a recruiting drive, with the before and after figure.
- A job with data in it. Analytics, operations, research assistance. It answers the question a thin resume raises, and it answers it for every later application.
- The one program that is open. If you are a second year reading this, Consulting Kickstart closed on 5 October 2026 and CREW, BEL and First Forward will have 2027 cycles. Diary the check rather than the deadline, because none of the three has published a 2027 date.
Timing is genuinely staggered by year, and at least one institution publishes it. Harvard Business School's 2026-2027 recruiting calendar opens events to second-year students on 2 September 2026 and to first-year students on 5 October, a gap of 33 days. That is an MBA calendar rather than an undergraduate one, and it is the clearest documented case of a year-based stagger we could source.
What no consulting internship publishes, and where practice fits
Six things a reader will still want, and the honest state of each.
Places per program: none of the eight publishes a number. Conversion to an offer: only Growing Future Leaders ever promised a return offer, on a page version since withdrawn. Deadlines for 2027: none of the seven closed programs publishes one, and Bain's BASE program is the only related page naming even a season. BEL's target year: unpublished since 2009. What firms want to see on a first-year resume: no firm publishes an evaluation standard, and we will not invent one. And whether a ninth program exists: our search covered firms whose pages we have already read, and others may run programs we have not found.
On practice, the timing advice you will read elsewhere is mostly right and worth stating with the reason attached. Case skill decays, and the interview that matters is two or three years away for a first year. Grinding cases now spends the effort at the wrong time.
What our drills are useful for in a first year is diagnosis rather than volume: run one of each type, read which named dimension scores lowest, and know what you will need to work on later. The weights behind those scores are published in our method. What they do not do: they do not run full cases, they teach no business content, they do not review a resume, and 0 of 6 of our assessment simulators are live today, as our assessments page states. None of that substitutes for the result with a number attached, which is the thing a first year can actually get and a program cannot give.
Before you go: where do you actually stand?
A short diagnostic: a few questions about where you are, one real case, and a score on the dimensions firms publish. Free, no card.

Edits the firm and case guides on this site. Reads each claim about a recruiting process back to the firm's own page before it is published, keeps the source ledger dated, and owns the corrections.
How this guide was made
- Written against a published editorial process, not from memory. Every claim about a firm's process is either linked to that firm's own page or absent. We say what we could not verify rather than filling the gap.
- Each page carries a dated source ledger, below. When a firm changes a programme or a deadline, the date tells you how far to trust what you just read.
We look for first-hand candidate accounts for every firm guide. Where we found none we could source, the page says so and carries the firm's own words instead. Nothing here is dressed up as testimony, and if your own experience contradicts what you read, tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
Something wrong or out of date here? Tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
