In short
  • Oliver Wyman writes a base salary range into its US job postings. Of 71 open US postings read on 29 September 2026, 51 carried one.
  • Senior Consultant $135,000 to $155,000. Associate $190,000 to $195,000. Engagement Manager $225,000 to $240,000. Principal $235,000 to $265,000.
  • The same firm posts the London entry role with no figure at all, so the US entry base was not sourceable on the day this page was written.
  • Partner appears in no posting. Six certified Labor filings carry five distinct Partner salaries, from $290,000 to $427,000.
  • The actuarial arm files under a separate employer name and a lower scale. Its Consultant postings top out $5,000 below where the strategy ladder starts.

Oliver Wyman puts a base salary range in the text of its US job postings. Not a vague statement about competitive pay. A sentence with two numbers in it, in almost every posting, and the same sentence each time. Of 71 open US postings read on 29 September 2026, 51 carried it. That is enough to draw the ladder from the firm's own words.

The Oliver Wyman consultant salary range in most US postings

The firm recruits through the Marsh McLennan careers site, and its own roles page confirms the arrangement: "Oliver Wyman is now part of the new, expanded Marsh brand". Each posting there carries a compensation paragraph near the end. Every posting quoted below was checked 29 September 2026.

Here is the consulting ladder as the postings price it. Every row quotes one posting, with the office and the date Oliver Wyman published it.

Level named in the posting Range the posting states Office and posting date
Senior Consultant $135,000 to $155,000 Boston, 22 September 2026
Senior Consultant or Associate $135,000 to $195,000 New York, 10 September 2026
Associate $190,000 to $195,000 New York, 18 May 2026
Associate or Engagement Manager $190,000 to $240,000 New York, 2 September 2026
Engagement Manager $225,000 to $240,000 New York, 22 September 2026
Principal $235,000 to $265,000 New York, 23 March 2026
Principal $250,000 to $260,000 Boston, 24 November 2025

Four of those rows come from postings published in the last month of the reading, which matters on a figure that moves. The oldest row on the table is a Boston Principal posting from November 2025, kept because it narrows the Principal range that the New York posting leaves wide.

Oliver Wyman

Reading about Oliver Wyman is not preparing for Oliver Wyman.

Take the readiness check

The Oliver Wyman consultant salary ladder steps unevenly

Reading the ranges against each other tells you where the steps are, and the steps are not even. Between the Senior Consultant ceiling of $155,000 and the Associate floor of $190,000 there is a gap of $35,000 that no posting covers. Between the Associate ceiling of $195,000 and the Engagement Manager floor of $225,000 there is a gap of $30,000.

Then the pattern reverses. The Engagement Manager ceiling of $240,000 sits $5,000 above the Principal floor of $235,000, so a well paid Engagement Manager can out-earn a new Principal on base alone.

The Engagement Manager band is the sturdiest figure on the page. Five separate postings state $225,000 to $240,000: New York twice, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, across practices as different as insurance, supply chain operations and retail. A band repeated five times in five contexts is a structure rather than one recruiter's number, and the band is $15,000 wide.

The certified Labor filings agree at both ends of that range. One Engagement Manager filing in New York carries $240,000, which is the posted ceiling to the dollar. One Senior Consultant filing in New York carries $155,000, which is the posted Boston ceiling to the dollar.

One sentence the firm repeats word for word

The wording is worth reading closely, because it is doing two jobs. The Boston Senior Consultant posting reads: "The applicable base salary range for this role is $135,000 to $155,000 USD." The New York Principal posting reads: "The applicable base salary range for this role is $235K - $265K."

Then comes the qualifier, identical across postings: "The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location". And separately: "In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives."

Three things follow from that last sentence. The range is base only. The incentive is described with may, so the firm commits to nothing. And no Oliver Wyman document read for this page prices the incentive, which means every total compensation figure in circulation for this firm is somebody's estimate.

One posting even writes its own numbers inconsistently. The Boston Senior Consultant range appears in the source as $135,000 and $155,000 split across markup, which is a formatting artifact rather than a second figure. We read the underlying text before quoting it.

The London posting for the same job says nothing

Oliver Wyman published an entry level Consultant role in London on 4 September 2026. That posting contains no compensation sentence of any kind. Same firm, same careers platform, same month, and no figure.

No US entry level Consultant posting was open on 29 September 2026. So this page cannot state an Oliver Wyman entry base for the United States, and it will not estimate one. The lowest level the current US postings price is Senior Consultant, at $135,000.

That absence has an owner. The number sits with Oliver Wyman's campus recruiting team, appears in the US entry level posting when that posting reopens for the next intake, and is written into the offer letter. Those are the three places to look, and a candidate can check the first two for free.

One filed row hints at the level below Senior Consultant without settling it. A certified Senior Associate filing in San Francisco carries $165,000, under a title that no current posting uses. A single row under an unused title is a data point and not a band.

Partner pay spans 47 percent in the government record

No Oliver Wyman posting read for this page prices a Partner. The Labor Department record does, six times. The third quarter disclosure file for fiscal 2026 holds 13 certified filings under the name Oliver Wyman, LLC, covering decisions from 1 October 2025 to 30 June 2026.

Six of those are Partner filings, and they carry five distinct salaries: $290,000 twice, in New York and Chicago, then $327,000, $350,000, $377,000 and $427,000. The top figure sits $137,000 above the bottom one, which is about 47 percent higher, since $427,000 divided by $290,000 gives 1.47.

That spread is the finding, and it is the opposite of what the junior levels show. Six junior filings at one firm would normally sit on one band. Six Partner filings sit on five numbers, which is what you would expect where pay is set case by case rather than by a grid.

The four Principal filings behave more like a band: $250,000 in Boston, $255,000 twice, and $260,000 in Princeton. That last one was filed under the occupation Database Architects, a reminder that the filed title and the filed occupation are two different fields. One filing records its worksite city as "Floor 40, NY", which is an address line rather than a city, and it is quoted here as it stands.

Oliver Wyman

Are you ready to get an offer at Oliver Wyman?

The actuarial arm files under a different name and a lower scale

Oliver Wyman's actuarial business files as a separate employer, Oliver Wyman Actuarial Consulting, Inc., with seven certified filings in the same period. Its postings carry the same transparency sentence and much lower numbers.

Level Actuarial posting range Strategy ladder at the same title
Consultant $85,000 to $130,000 no current US posting
Manager $115,000 to $155,000 Engagement Manager $225,000 to $240,000
Principal $180,000 to $250,000 Principal $235,000 to $265,000

Read the first row against the ladder above. The actuarial Consultant range tops out at $130,000, and the strategy Senior Consultant range starts at $135,000, so the actuarial ceiling sits $5,000 below where the strategy ladder begins. At Manager the gap is $70,000 between the actuarial ceiling of $155,000 and the strategy floor of $225,000.

The filings confirm the scale. Actuarial rows run from $90,000 for a Consultant in Chicago, at experience level I, to $194,400 for a Senior Manager in Charlotte. One business development posting in Chicago is the outlier, at $188,000 to $400,000, which is a range wide enough to cover four levels of the strategy ladder.

If you are comparing an Oliver Wyman offer against another firm, check which entity issued it. The name on the letter decides which of these two scales applies.

A three level posting's midpoint is nobody's salary

Oliver Wyman often advertises one role for several levels, and then states one range for all of them. Four such postings were open on 29 September 2026.

  1. Chicago, 5 June 2026. Engagement Manager, Associate or Senior Consultant, at $135,000 to $240,000.
  2. Washington, 17 September 2026. Senior Consultant, Associate and Engagement Manager, at $135,000 to $240,000.
  3. New York, 18 August 2026. Senior Consultant, Associate or Engagement Manager, at $135,000 to $225,000.
  4. Boston, 9 January 2026. The same three levels plus Principal, at $135,000 to $240,000.

The widest of those spans $105,000, since $240,000 less $135,000 leaves that amount. A range that wide tells you nothing about your own offer, and treating its midpoint as an expectation is the single most common error on this query. The midpoint of $135,000 and $240,000 is $187,500, which is a number no Oliver Wyman level carries.

Use the single level postings for the level you are actually applying to, and use the multi level range only as a sanity check that your level sits inside it. Our consulting salary guide sets these figures beside other firms, and why Oliver Wyman covers what the firm says about itself.

Which Oliver Wyman number is missing, and who has it

Four gaps, named rather than filled.

The US entry base. No open US posting priced it on 29 September 2026. The campus posting will, when the next intake opens.

The incentive. The firm says a role may be eligible for performance based incentives and prices nothing. Its compensation team holds the amount, and a recruiter can state a range on a call.

Anything above Partner. Six filings, five values, no structure. Senior compensation at a firm inside a listed parent is not published at the individual level.

Class level context. Wharton's 2025 Career Report, created 19 December 2025, puts the Class of 2025 consulting median base at $190,000. Its employer list for that class does not name Oliver Wyman, so the median is a market reference and not a reading of this firm.

Ask for the number you are missing in writing. Our offer negotiation guide covers what to ask and in what order, and the posted range is the anchor to quote.

Structuring an answer against a published weight

The ranges above only matter if the interview goes well, and at Oliver Wyman that means a case. Our structure drill grades a framework in seconds. The scale behind it is ours, written by us, published on our method page, and no firm publishes anything comparable.

Dimension Share of the score What it looks at
Coverage 45 The branches a strong answer has to reach
Separation 25 Whether the branches overlap
Depth 20 Whether you go one level under the headline
Concision 10 Whether an interviewer can follow it by ear

Coverage 45 is the heaviest line in that scale, and it is heavy because a missing branch cannot be recovered later in the case. Two limits, stated plainly. The drill teaches no sector content, so it will do nothing for an insurance or energy case on its own. And our assessment simulators are not running: the assessments page says 0 of 6 simulators are live, in those words, on the page itself.

Run one before you think about negotiation. Our Oliver Wyman case interview guide covers what the firm's own interviews ask for, and the rest of the process, fifteen minutes and one year of it, sits beside the case.

Where the earlier version of this page was wrong

29 September 2026. An earlier version of this page ran to about 330 words, published no figure, and said that Oliver Wyman does not publish compensation. That was wrong in the most checkable way available: the firm states a base salary range in 51 of its 71 open US postings, and it repeats the same sentence in each one.

That version also described pay as moving by office within a level. Five Engagement Manager postings in four cities state the same $225,000 to $240,000, so the office claim does not hold at that level on the evidence read here. What does differ by geography is whether a figure appears at all, and the London entry posting is the example.

One further line was removed. The earlier version advised comparing offers on total first-year cash. Oliver Wyman prices no incentive in any document read for this page, so that comparison cannot be made from public sources. The replacement is narrower: compare base against the posted range for your level and your entity, then ask the recruiter to put the incentive range in writing.

How this guide was made

  • Written against a published editorial process, not from memory. Every claim about a firm's process is either linked to that firm's own page or absent. We say what we could not verify rather than filling the gap.
  • Each page carries a dated source ledger, below. When a firm changes a programme or a deadline, the date tells you how far to trust what you just read.

We look for first-hand candidate accounts for every firm guide. Where we found none we could source, the page says so and carries the firm's own words instead. Nothing here is dressed up as testimony, and if your own experience contradicts what you read, tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
