How Do You Get Into Consulting in 2026: Four Live Doors
How do you get into consulting? Four live doors, each with the degree rule and closing date the firm printed: Deloitte 1 November 2026, BCG 13 August 2026.
- Four doors carry different rules: the campus door, the post-graduate door, the internship door, and the experienced door.
- Your degree, and not your preference, decides which one you may use. BCG closes its Associate deadlines to MBA candidates in writing.
- The doors carry dates. Deloitte's campus strategy analyst postings close on 1 November 2026, and its audit analyst posting closes on 11 October 2026.
- A business degree is absent from every requirement list we read. Deloitte lists Liberal Arts among its accepted majors.
- At INSEAD, 29 percent of the 2024 class found their job through a former employer, which is a door no application form describes.
Consulting hiring runs through four doors, and each one prints its own rule. Your degree decides which door you may use. The date it closes is written on the posting itself. This page reads the doors that were open on 30 September 2026 and quotes what each one asks.
How do you get into consulting with a bachelor's or an MBA
The firms publish the rule, and they publish it where the job is, rather than on a student overview page. Read the posting title first and the degree line under it second.
| Firm | Door after a bachelor's | Door after an MBA or doctorate | Where the rule is written |
|---|---|---|---|
| McKinsey | Business Analyst | Associate | the undergraduate and MBA student pages |
| BCG | Associate | Consultant | the two US campus pages |
| Bain | Associate Consultant | Consultant | the management consulting work area page |
| Deloitte | Analyst, campus posting | experienced postings by practice | each live posting |
| KPMG | Associate | Advisory Senior Associate, Advanced Degree | the advanced degree posting |
BCG writes the boundary twice, from both sides. Its US Associate campus page, checked 29 September 2026, says "Undergraduate and non-MBA master's students from all fields of study and backgrounds are welcome to apply", then "If you are currently pursuing your MBA or other educational degree, you are not eligible to apply for these deadlines." The US MBA page titles its own application Consultant.
The same word means two jobs at two firms. McKinsey's MBA page says "Check our open roles: Associate | Summer Associate (intern)", so Associate there is the post-MBA seat. At BCG it is the seat you take with a bachelor's. Our BCG ladder page and McKinsey hierarchy page carry the rungs above each door.
Reading about a consulting firm is not preparing for a consulting firm.
Take the readiness checkThe dates on these doors, read on 30 September 2026
A door with no date is a guide's invention. Live postings carry one, and the wording is unambiguous.
- Deloitte, campus Enterprise Strategy Analyst: "Recruiting for this role ends on 11/01/2026", which is 1 November 2026 on a US posting. Two sibling postings, Enterprise Tech Strategy and Functional Operations Strategy, carry the same date.
- Deloitte, campus Audit and Assurance Analyst for the Summer and Fall 2027 and Winter 2028 classes: "Recruiting for this role ends on October 11, 2026".
- BCG, US MBA cycle: 13 August 2026 for US and Canadian offices, 11 September 2026 for international offices. Both have passed, and they tell you where next year's fall.
- BCG, Consultant Advanced Degree posting dated 28 September 2026: start dates of April 2027 or August 2027.
- KPMG, Advisory Senior Associate in Strategy for advanced degrees: the posting is for the Summer and Fall 2027 class.
Schools publish a second calendar that constrains the first. The HBS recruiting calendar for 2026 to 2027 sets 3 December 2026 at 5pm ET as the application deadline for its coordinated January interviews, opens internship interviews on 5 January 2027, and sets 5 February 2027 as the earliest offer decision deadline for summer internships. Our MBA recruiting timeline tracks the sequence those dates create.
Which doors print a grade floor, and which do not
Deloitte's campus Enterprise Strategy Analyst posting, checked 30 September 2026, asks for enrollment in an accredited college with graduation by spring or summer 2027, then adds one parenthesis: "Strong academic track record (3.3 cumulative GPA required, 3.5 cumulative GPA preferred)."
The same firm's experienced Analyst posting in Strategy, Growth and Transformation, read the same day, asks for a bachelor's degree and then repeats "1+ years of experience" four times, across product management, business analysis, Agile backlog work and requirements documentation. No grade appears anywhere in it.
The campus posting even tells you when to stop reading it: "For roles that require a year or more of work experience, please review the experienced jobs within our careers site." One firm, one job title, two requirement sets. Which set applies to you is decided by the door, and the door is decided by how long you have worked. Our page on applying with a low GPA works through what each floor does to an application.
KPMG shows the limit of that comfort. Its advanced degree Strategy posting asks for an MBA earned within twelve months and a minimum of three years of experience, and still states "Must have a current/most recent cumulative GPA over 3.0". The same careers site tells applicants what to bring: "You'll need 10 minutes, your resume and unofficial transcripts."
An eight point swing, and who opened the door
Schools publish outcomes, and the numbers move year to year. Harvard Business School's employment trends data, checked 29 September 2026, gives the consulting share of five classes: 23 percent in 2021, 26 percent in 2022, 25 percent in 2023, 18 percent in 2024 and 21 percent in 2025. From 26 down to 18 is a swing of eight points across three consecutive classes, which is the honest answer to how reliable this route is.
INSEAD's employment statistics report a different scale for the 2025 vintage: "Management consulting remained the leading destination, attracting 50% of graduates", from 929 graduating participants with a 98 percent response rate.
The 2024 vintage of the same report answers a question no application form covers. Asked how they found their job, graduates named the school career service or alumni in 219 cases, which is 40 percent, a former employer in 158 cases, which is 29 percent, their own contacts in 101 cases, which is 18 percent, and a summer internship in 52 cases, which is 9 percent. Nearly three in ten walked back through a door they had already used. What these seats pay sits on our consulting salary guide, sourced separately.
Are you ready to get an offer at a consulting firm?
A business degree is on none of the requirement lists
The undergraduate door does not screen for a business major, and two firms say so in print. McKinsey's interviewing page says the firm seeks "smart, driven problem-solvers from a wide range of disciplines", and names law, medicine and engineering in the same sentence.
Deloitte's campus strategy posting lists what it will read: Business, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Operations, Supply Chain, and Liberal Arts, with psychology and industrial and labor relations given as examples of the last. A liberal arts transcript clears the stated bar as long as the grade line clears it.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the major on your transcript is rarely the binding constraint, so time spent switching it is usually time lost. Second, the case interview assumes no industry knowledge, which is why any fact you need in a case is handed to you when you ask for it. Our undergraduate recruiting guide covers the campus-specific mechanics that sit around this.
What the internship work looks like before it converts
The internship is the only door that can hand you a full-time offer before the full-time cycle opens. McKinsey's undergraduate page puts the Business Analyst internship at eight to ten weeks. Bain's management consulting page lists Intern as the first rung of its ladder, ahead of Associate Consultant.
Anna Smolders, a Digital Associate in Brussels, described that route on the McKinsey careers blog on 15 March 2023: "During my internship, I worked on an analytics-fueled approach for product portfolio optimization." She had studied electrical engineering at Ghent, worked as a research assistant on a machine learning health project, then returned to the firm full time after graduating. One account published by an employer is promotional by construction, and it is still first hand about one path.
What the summer contains is worth reading from someone who just did it. Teni Sulaiman of the Tuck Class of 2027 wrote in the school's internship diaries on 24 September 2026 that he supported a Canadian mining client on risk management and financial modeling, and "I spent most of the summer colocating with my team at the client's office, just outside Toronto." He also ran a risk workshop in front of about twenty of the client's executives, including the chief operating officer.
What none of these firms publish about how to get into consulting
Six things are missing from every page we read, and they are the six most often asserted elsewhere.
Application volume by door. No firm publishes how many people apply to a campus posting or an experienced one, so any ratio you see has no owner you can check.
Selection rate at each stage. Absent everywhere, and held only by the firm's recruiting function.
The split between campus and off-cycle hiring. The firms publish doors rather than the share of hires each one carries, so the relative size of these routes is unknown to us.
What a referral is worth against a cold application. We have not measured it, no firm publishes it, and the honest version is that our referrals page describes the mechanism without attaching a multiplier to it.
How a posted grade floor is applied. The Deloitte postings state a required figure and a preferred one, and neither says whether a recruiter reads the number as a cutoff or as one signal among several. That distinction changes what an applicant at 3.2 should do, and only the firm holds it.
Whether an off-cycle application is read at all once a campus window has closed. The postings carry a closing date and say nothing about what happens to a file that arrives after it.
Each of these six gaps is filled confidently somewhere on this query. None of them is filled by a document you can open, which is the reason we leave them named and empty here.
Where to drill the part that responds to practice
Of the four doors, three are decided by facts you cannot change this month: your degree, your years of experience, and the calendar. The interview is the part that moves with work, and it is the same exercise behind every door on the table above.
Our free structure drill grades one thing: whether your opening breakdown covers the question and separates cleanly. The scale it grades against is ours rather than any firm's, and the weights are published in our code and on the method page. No firm publishes a rubric, which is why ours carries our name on it.
Three things the tool will not do. It teaches no business content, because the case interview tests none. It does not stand in for a firm's own screen: our assessments page says 0 of 6 simulators are live, on the page itself. And it cannot tell you whether you clear a posted grade floor, which is a fact about the posting and about your transcript.
What runs today is the drills and the graded scorecard, free and without an account. If you want the sequence around them, our interview prep timeline lays out the order, and the firm pages linked above carry each screen as its owner describes it.
Before you go: where do you actually stand?
A short diagnostic: a few questions about where you are, one real case, and a score on the dimensions firms publish. Free, no card.

Edits the firm and case guides on this site. Reads each claim about a recruiting process back to the firm's own page before it is published, keeps the source ledger dated, and owns the corrections.
How this guide was made
- Written against a published editorial process, not from memory. Every claim about a firm's process is either linked to that firm's own page or absent. We say what we could not verify rather than filling the gap.
- Each page carries a dated source ledger, below. When a firm changes a programme or a deadline, the date tells you how far to trust what you just read.
We look for first-hand candidate accounts for every firm guide. Where we found none we could source, the page says so and carries the firm's own words instead. Nothing here is dressed up as testimony, and if your own experience contradicts what you read, tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
Something wrong or out of date here? Tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
