HBS Case Book: Three Different Things Share the Name

At Harvard, case book means a club interview document, the school's teaching cases, or a second club serving other faculties. Only one is what you want.

In short
  • Three different things answer to this query at Harvard: a consulting club interview document, the school's published teaching cases, and a second consulting club serving other faculties.
  • HBS publishes that its recognized clubs sit inside a separate legal entity, Student Clubs of HBS, Inc. So a club document belongs to that entity rather than to the university.
  • The other Harvard club runs a page titled Case Books and Resources that serves no case book, and disclaims every third party it lists.
  • The Management Consulting Club's own page carries no download, no edition and no membership price. Nothing is published about what members receive.
  • Consulting paid HBS a $190,000 base at the 25th percentile and $192,000 at the 75th, a $2,000 spread where the whole class spans $32,000.

At Harvard, the phrase in this query points at three unrelated objects, and one of the ranked results for it is a teaching case record on the school's own domain. Separating them is the first useful thing any page can do here, and the school's own publications do most of the work.

The three objects called an HBS case book, and which you want

What people mean What it actually is Who publishes it
A consulting interview document A collection of prompts written up by students at the business school A student club, if anyone
An HBS case A teaching case used in class, written by faculty The school, as a publishing operation
The Harvard Graduate Consulting Club material Resources for arts, sciences and engineering students A different club, different faculties

The middle row is a major editorial business. The business library organizes its collections around databases and cases, with a section dedicated to HBS cases and a pointer to the faculty's case development work. On that domain the word case means a teaching document, and it shares nothing with an interview prompt except four letters.

The third row is a separate student organization serving the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the engineering school rather than the MBA program. Its page is the one actually titled "Case Books & Resources", which is part of why this query is a mess.

So the object you came for is the first row, and it is the only one of the three that nobody publishes.

Reading about a consulting firm is not preparing for a consulting firm.

Take the readiness check

What HBS publishes about who owns a club's work

This is the finding that decides the rights question, and it sits on the school's own domain. The Management Consulting Club page states that recognized HBS clubs sit inside a separate legal entity, a 501(c)(3) called Student Clubs of HBS, Inc., and that each club is open to enrolled students and registered partners.

Read the consequence. A document produced by an HBS club is, if it belongs to anybody, the property of that separate corporation rather than of Harvard Business School or of Harvard University. The school is explicit about the structure, and the structure is what a rights question runs into first.

That is the same conclusion the University of Virginia reaches by a different route. UVA prints a clause on its Consulting Club page saying the club "is not a part of or an agency of the University", which we work through on our Darden case book page. Two schools, two mechanisms, one answer: the school is not the publisher.

What the HBS club page does not carry is anything else. No download, no edition, no case count, no membership price, no statement about redistribution. It describes itself as offering learning, exposure and interaction with the consulting industry, and stops. What it gives a member has been on our unknown list since 29 September 2026 and remains there.

The page titled Case Books that serves no case book

The other Harvard club runs a page under exactly the heading this query wants, and it is worth reading for what is on it.

It opens with a disclaimer rather than a file: "All resources listed on this page are for informational purposes only. HGCC does not endorse or verify any services provided, or information distributed, by third parties."

Then it lists commercial prep platforms, trade books, and the career offices available across Harvard, directing arts and sciences students to their own faculty career centre. We do not name or link prep vendors, so the observation stands without them: a student club page headed with the words case books contains none, lists a dozen outside suppliers instead, and disclaims all of them in its first sentence.

That disclaimer is doing real work and deserves credit. A club that lists third party services and states it has not verified them is behaving better than most pages on this subject, including some that present a downloaded file as though somebody had checked it.

Two more distinctions before leaving this. The club serves different faculties, so its advice is aimed at doctoral and master's candidates rather than MBA students. And its domain is a commercial one rather than a school domain, which is why nothing on this page treats it as a school publication.

The results on this query are copies and confusions. Reading them on 30 September 2026, the distribution was two on a general document host including one dated 2004, one on a finance forum, five forum threads, a shop selling a document attributed to HBS, one commercial prep page, the other Harvard club's page, and a teaching case record on hbs.edu.

Not one result serves an interview document from an HBS domain. None of the copies carries a license statement or any permission, and the ownership chain runs into a separate corporation that publishes no distribution policy. So this page contains no download and no link to one.

There is a pattern beyond the aggregators worth knowing. A career services site at an unrelated university republishes six case books in open download, attributed to Duke, Darden, HBS, McGill, Wharton and Yale, with no mention of permission from the clubs that wrote them. Institutions redistribute these files too, and document their right to do so no better than anybody else.

For an HBS student the route is the club and the career office. For everybody else, the next section is the substitute and it is better sourced than every copy above combined.

What the firms publish, including one instruction nobody else gives

Across seven firms we count 65 separate published instructions and 43 practice cases readable with no account. Oliver Wyman publishes the single most useful one for anybody working a case book prompt, because it corrects the posture a PDF teaches.

On the relationship: "Think of your case interviewer as your client. They want you to solve the problem, and can help you to do so. Work together." Reading a write-up alone trains the opposite reflex, where the answer is something to be produced rather than something to be built with somebody.

And under its step about choosing an approach, the firm asks for something no student write-up demands: "Show your client why it's better than the alternatives." That is the only published instruction in our whole corpus that requires a candidate to justify the choice of structure rather than simply state it. A case book gives you finished structures. It never asks why that one.

The same firm publishes a practice case with evaluation criteria printed underneath each individual question, and those criteria change from question to question. It is the closest thing to a published marking scheme anywhere in the corpus, and it shows that what is being assessed moves as a case progresses.

Accenture adds the provenance contrast in its own case interview workbook: "The cases given tend to be real business situations, often drawn from the interviewer's actual project experience." And the only published duration: "Case interviews typically last from 45 to 60 minutes, with a focus on the case itself lasting 30 to 45 minutes." Both checked 29 September 2026.

No firm publishes a weight. Across forty-four firm research files we hold, zero contain a published scoring scheme, so any page showing you a firm's rubric with numbers on it is showing a fabrication.

Are you ready to get an offer at a consulting firm?

What HBS does publish about consulting, and the flat number

The school publishes placement data in detail, and the consulting row has a shape worth knowing before you optimize for it.

Base salary, Class of 2025 Consulting All industries
25th percentile $190,000 $160,000
Median $190,000 $185,000
75th percentile $192,000 $192,000

Read the consulting column downward. The distance from the 25th to the 75th percentile is $2,000. Across the whole class the same distance is $32,000, which is sixteen times wider. Consulting pays one number at this school, set by the firm rather than negotiated.

The bonus lines point the same way. The median consulting signing bonus is $30,000 and 91 percent of consulting hires received one; the median variable bonus is $40,000 and 91 percent received that too. Across all industries the equivalent shares are 58 and 67 percent. Consulting took 21 percent of the class.

What the school withholds is the count per firm. It publishes a named list of organizations that hired a Class of 2025 graduate or a Class of 2026 intern and attaches no numbers, so "how many HBS graduates did a given firm take" has no published answer. Our Harvard recruiting page works the whole dataset, including the school's recruiting calendar, which is dated to the day and is the most useful document on the subject anywhere.

Working one prompt so the firm's instruction gets exercised

The prompt is the asset. Everything after it is one club's reconstruction from memory, and the two instructions above tell you what to add.

  1. The partner reads the situation and the question once, then goes quiet. No exhibit, no hint, no additional sentence, whatever the pause costs.
  2. Ninety seconds on paper, announced aloud. The partner calls the start and the stop and means both.
  3. Deliver the structure and then defend the choice. Say in one sentence why this shape beats an obvious alternative for this business. That is Oliver Wyman's instruction and no write-up trains it.
  4. Treat the partner as a client rather than an examiner. Ask for what you need by name, say the unit before every product, and think out loud rather than performing a finished answer.
  5. One sentence of recommendation, answer first. Then the number under it, then the risk that would reverse it.

Then swap seats. Accenture's 30 to 45 minute band is the right budget per attempt, so an hour covers a pair working one prompt each way. The partner's whole job is to withhold, to time and to record, and the exercise fails through generosity rather than through difficulty.

Reading a write-up when the school is a publisher of real cases

There is one advantage available at this school that nowhere else in this batch has, and it has nothing to do with a club document. HBS publishes teaching cases as a business, and a teaching case is a real company with real numbers written up at length.

Those are not interview prompts and should not be used as if they were. A teaching case is thirty pages where an interview prompt is three sentences. But reading one properly builds the thing a case book cannot: the habit of forming a view about an actual business rather than recognizing a pattern in a summary.

So the division of labor is clean. Use a club prompt for the exercise under a clock. Use a teaching case for the business judgment, on a weekend, without a timer. And use the firms' own published cases when you want a prompt whose provenance is a live engagement rather than a memory.

Where a write-up carries an exhibit, cover its commentary and read the chart yourself first. Chart reading is scored on its own and a write-up hands you the interpretation free, which is the one thing an interviewer never does.

Naming the dimension after an HBS practice case

A miss earns a place in your notes when it names something repeatable. Dropping a whole cost branch is a coverage failure and it happens again within a fortnight on another industry. Forgetting one specific line item inside one prompt is noise.

The four numbers in the table come out of src/lib/grading/rubrics.ts in our own repository, and they are ours alone. No consulting firm publishes a comparable scheme, at Harvard or anywhere, which is the reason this paragraph exists at all.

Dimension Weight, structuring rubric
Coverage 45
Separation 25
Depth 20
Concision 10

Coverage carries 45 of the 100 points because of the failure it describes. Miss a whole branch of the problem and precision inside the branches you did cover does not recover the answer. Mapping the protocol above onto the table takes three lines. A branch a partner recorded as absent is Coverage. Two branches counting the same dollar twice is Separation. A structure delivered inside the clock with no specific line under any branch is Depth.

Each of the six rubrics, with the argument behind every weight in it, is set out on how an answer is assessed. Everything in the tools opens without an account, scoring these dimensions against prompts we wrote ourselves, and the structuring drill hands back the first correction instead of a score. What none of it does: play an interviewer, teach any business content, or simulate an assessment, since none of our six simulators has shipped and that page says so plainly.

What changed on the HBS page, and the pointer deleted

30 September 2026. Rewritten after the school's club page, its library and its employment data were read, and after the second Harvard club's resources page was read a second time. The earlier version ran 271 words. It described what a case book is good and bad for and never separated the three objects that share this phrase at Harvard, which is the actual difficulty on this query.

The earlier version closed by pointing readers at our own free resources page for case books from several schools. That page has never held one. No such file exists on this site, and the rights position above is exactly why none will be added. We deleted the pointer from all eleven pages that carried it, after a repository check on 29 September 2026 found no PDF, no ZIP and no archive of any kind.

Two controls stay red on purpose. We hold no first-hand account from an HBS student who worked a club document. On 29 September 2026 both a plain fetch and a headless browser were refused by the forum network with a security block, and on 30 September the search quota was already spent. And we cannot say what the Management Consulting Club distributes to its members, because nothing about it is published and the club sits inside an entity that publishes no policy. Every attempt and its date is in the research file.

Edits the firm and case guides on this site. Reads each claim about a recruiting process back to the firm's own page before it is published, keeps the source ledger dated, and owns the corrections.

How this guide was made

  • Written against a published editorial process, not from memory. Every claim about a firm's process is either linked to that firm's own page or absent. We say what we could not verify rather than filling the gap.
  • Each page carries a dated source ledger, below. When a firm changes a programme or a deadline, the date tells you how far to trust what you just read.

We look for first-hand candidate accounts for every firm guide. Where we found none we could source, the page says so and carries the firm's own words instead. Nothing here is dressed up as testimony, and if your own experience contradicts what you read, tell us and we will correct it and date the change.
